Ocular Pathology

  • UCSF Ocular Pathology is a joint division between the UCSF Department of Pathology and the UCSF Department of Ophthalmology.  Our nationally recognized ocular pathology team combines their clinical ophthalmology background with their expertise at the microscope to provide timely consultations.
  • We receive consultations from other pathologists on complex cases.  In addition ophthalmologists and other treating physicians may request a second opinion from a UCSF ocular pathologist before they perform a large resection or start treatment. Occasionally patients, or parents of young patients may request a second opinion. We review previously prepared slides and occasionally perform additional ancillary studies on the formalin fixed paraffin embedded material. We also have access to the state of technologies ranging from ultrastructural (electron microscopy) analysis  to molecular diagnostics including targeted next generation sequencing [link to UCSF500].
  • A final report is issued in Pathology reporting system, which is faxed to the referring physician. A copy will also be sent to the pathologist who provided the original diagnosis on this case. The pathology report can also be accessed through the UCSF electronic medical record system, and through CareEverywhere.
