Informatics

Residents gain experience in Clinical Informatics through a single, month-long core rotation with the opportunity to pursue advanced topics through additional elective time or the UCSF GME sponsored Clinical Informatics and Data Science (CIDS) pathway. The rotation is predominantly virtual, with opportunities for select in person activities depending on scheduled departmental or enterprise informatics initiatives.

The rotation provides a broad overview of informatics topics pertinent to the practice of laboratory medicine and pathology. Through a combination of didactics, independent pre-work, and exposure to select operational meetings, trainees should finish the informatics rotation with at least a basic understanding of:

  • The definition and scope of clinical informatics
  • Laboratory Information System (LIS) design
  • IT resource design
  • HL7 messaging standard
  • Process redesign
  • Project management
  • Change management
  • The 21 Century Cures Act
  • Artificial Intelligence
  • Cybersecurity
