Lab Manual for UCSF Clinical Laboratories

Lab Manual for SFGH

Internal Resources

The online version of the Clinical Laboratory Manual is intended to answer most of your questions about Laboratory services at Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital and Trauma Center (ZSFG). However, if you need more detailed information or assistance in selecting tests or interpreting results, please do not hesitate to contact us. A Laboratory Medicine Resident is on call at all times, and the Laboratory Director, Division Chiefs and other professionals are available for consultation on either specific cases or general problems (see section on How to Contact Us under General Information).

In order to ensure quality results and to avoid unnecessary delays, please follow the procedures recommended here for collecting specimens and requesting tests. Consult this website first if you are not sure about the availability of a test or the type of specimen needed. Prior approval by a Laboratory Medicine Resident or Attending is required for any procedure not specifically listed in the Clinical Laboratory Manual. Occasionally, a laboratory report will appear to be inconsistent with the clinical picture or with prior test results and you may suspect a "laboratory error." When this happens, please call the laboratory supervisor or resident immediately to check for possible clerical errors or technical problems. If we learn about the problem early, we can often repeat the test on the same specimen or on a fresh sample.

We welcome requests for laboratory tests performed for research protocols by UCSF or SFDPH investigators, on the condition that these do not interfere with our primary responsibility of clinical testing for patient care. Special prices are available for research tests but funding will be the responsibility of the investigator; research tests cannot be billed to patients or absorbed by the Clinical Laboratory. Advance approval is required. Please see section on "Research Testing."

The Clinical Laboratory Manual will be updated continually, as necessary. Supplemental information, major revisions and new procedures will be announced throughout the year in laboratory memoranda and bulletins .
