Principle Analyte specific electrodes.
Container type air-tight glass or plastic syringe from blood gas kit, containing 100 units of dry heparin.
Collection Instructions Use syringes in ABG kit or 1 cc tuberculin syringe only. DO NOT USE SAFETY SYRINGES WITH THE SAFETY SHIELD ATTACHED, AND DO NOT SUBMIT SYRINGES WITH NEEDLES – NEITHER WILL BE ACCEPTED. If the syringe is not from an ABG kit, rinse the syringe with 1000 unit/mL sodium heparin prior to drawing blood. A minuscule amount of residual heparin (.03 mL) is more than adequate to anti-coagulate 1.5 mL of blood. Do not use anticoagulants other than heparin. Expel air bubbles from the syringe and cap it.

Special instructions 1. The patient's full name must be written on the syringe and a requisition with the full name, medical record number, account number, physician's ID, and patient's location must accompany the specimen.

2. Indicate whether the patient is breathing room air or supplemental gas.

Stability Blood pH falls and PCO2 rises fairly rapidly once the sample is drawn. PCO2 and pH should be determined within 30 minutes of sampling. When longer delays are expected, store the sealed samples in ice water. Stability for iced samples is 1 – 2 hours.
Interferences 1. improperly drawn specimens;

2. improperly handled specimens prior to sampling, i.e., not on ice;

3. improper anticoagulant;

4. any degree of clotting - specimen will not be run.
