Principle Yersinia pestis will grow in standard culture media. Identification by direct fluorescent antibody directly from a positive blood culture bottle, or confirmatory testing by phage susceptibility on a bacterial isolate is available through California State Microbial Diseases Laboratory.
Collection Instructions It is essential that you notify the Microbiology laboratory if you suspect a diagnosis of plague to ensure that culture is properly processed, identified rapidly, and appropriate safety measures are used in handling the culture.
