Principle Specimens are inoculated onto plate media that are incubated and observed daily. Negative culture final reports are issued after 48 hours of incubation. If growth is observed, the total number of bacteria are counted and identified. Antimicrobial susceptibility testing will be performed when appropriate.

Special instructions Indicate on requisition the type of collection. (Catheter, suprapubic, nephrostomy, post-prostatic massage, etc.)
Synonyms Urine Culture;
Stability The urine, in a labeled sterile container, must be placed in a pan or carton with ice or an insulated carrier with blue ice and sent immediately to the laboratory. Alternatively, refrigerate specimen until cold and send to the laboratory.
Additional information GRAM STAINS: Urine Gram stains are routinely done on special collections only, e.g., catheter, nephrostomy, suprapubic, post prostatic massage, or upon request.
