In House Availability Specimen may be sent to the Laboratory 24 hours/7 days. Test is performed once per day, on the day shift, 7 days a week.
Principle This test is for the simultaneous qualitative detection and differentiation of Shiga toxin 1 and Shiga toxin 2 produced by toxigenic strains of Escherichia coli .

Amount to Collect 5 mL
Collection Instructions Collect stool in Para-Pak C&S vial, available through Lab Support Services (415-206-8199). Multi-language directions in the collection kit describe proper collection.

If stool is submitted in sterile, screw cap container, it must be received in the Microbiology Laboratory within 2 hours of collection.

Stability Unpreserved: 2 hours.
Preserved in Para-Pak C&S vial and refrigerated 2° - 8°C: 3 days.
Causes for rejection 1. Unpreserved stool (in sterile cup) received > 2 hours after collection.
2. Stool in Para-Pak C&S vial received > 72 hours after collection.
3. Stool in any formalin-based or alcohol-based fixatives.
4. Stool collected on swabs or culturettes; i.e., rectal swabs.
5. Leaking specimens.
6. More than one specimen collected within 24 hours.
7. Specimens submitted within 4 days of a prior POSITIVE result.
8. Specimens submitted less than or equal to 24 hours of a prior NEGATIVE result.
Turn around times 2 days
Reflex? Culture for E. coli O157 and Shiga Toxin Assay are automatically performed on stool submitted for bacterical culture. Each test is billed separately.
