Principle Competitive enzyme immunoassay.
Interpretation CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE: 6-acetylmorphine, also known as 6 monoacetylmorphine (6-MAM), is a unique metabolite of heroin (3,6-diacetylmorphine). Clearance rates for 6-acetylmorphine are dependent on factors such as frequency of heroin use, amount of heroin used, and metabolism rates. On average, 6-MAM can be detected in urine for 12-24 hours after heroin use. A positive 6-MAM result indicates recent heroin use. A negative result does not exclude heroin use.

CUTOFF: 10 ng/mL

Drug Detection Period (approximate guideline) = 12-24 hours

Positive results are not confirmed. Confirmation an be performed as an "add on" test by special request, if there is any specimen available. Page the Chemistry/Toxicology Fellow on call at 719-5166, if you have questions about confirmatory testing.

This assay is sensitive to 6-acetylmorphine, and has a 57% cross-reactivity with heroin. This assay is less sensitive to other opiates, such as codeine, morphine, hydrocodone, hydromorphone, oxycodone, or oxymorphone. This assay does not cross-react against any of the other, non-opiate, narcotic analgesics; i.e., fentanyl, methadone, or meperidine.
