Principle Uricase catalyzes oxidation of uric acid to allantoin and H2O2. The colored complex formed is measured spectrophotometrically.
Interpretation Uric acid fluctuates widely in the same individual from day to day, with seasonal variations, and is varied by diet (increased by meat, liver, legumes, mushrooms, and spinach); increased by fasting and emotional stress.
Collection Instructions Refrigerate urine during collection.
Sample type 24 hour urine collection preferred (refrigerate during collection)
Special instructions For evaluation of joint fluid uric acid crystals, contact the Laboratory Medicine Resident in Clinical Chemistry (x65527, or pager (415) 443-2311).
Normal range 0.25-0.75 g/24 hr (1.49-4.46 mmol/d) (varies with diet).
Stability Urine is stable at 2-8°C for 3 days, and frozen for 6 months.
Joint fluid stable at 2-8°C for 24 hr.
