Principle The CSF is inoculated to plate and broth media and incubated. All positive Gram stained smears and cultures are phoned to the physician.
Container type The sterile tubes provided with LP trays are used to collect CSF for culture.
Amount to Collect 1-2 mL
Collection Instructions The sterile tubes provided with LP trays are used to collect CSF for culture. Generally, tube #2 or #3 is best suited for culture since these are less likely contaminated with skin flora. Specimen should be delivered immediately to the Microbiology Lab (2M33).

Preferred volume When tuberculous or fungal meningitis is suspected larger volumes are necessary.
