In House Availability Available with approval from the Microbiology Laboratory Medicine Resident. Testing will be done only if there is clinical evidence of treatment failure with at least one drug. Testing is available for Herpes simplex virus, cytomegalovirus, and varicella-zoster virus. Viral isolate is sent via Clinical Microbiology Laboratory to a Reference Lab for testing. Results are available in two to four weeks. Please contact the Microbiology Lab Medicine Resident for further information, pager (415) 443-1438.
Principle Plaque reduction assay (HSV) or DNA hybridization (CMV and VZV).
Interpretation Interpretation of results (susceptible or resistant) is reported with the ID50 value.
Special instructions REQUISITION: Microbiology (Viral-Other: write in request). Request for susceptibility testing must be made when culture is submitted. Otherwise, isolate for testing may not be available.
