Principle Pyrogallol red dye reacts with proteins in CSF to form a colored complex. Absorbance of the complex is proportional to the protein concentration in the sample.
Interpretation High protein occurs with tuberculous meningitis, pyogenic meningitis, aseptic meningitis, syphilis, poliomyelitis, viral encephalitis, toxoplasmosis, tumors, cerebral thrombosis, subarachnoid hemorrhage. Normal in alcoholism, epilepsy, diabetic coma, and polyneuritis. Elevation may result from fluid collection (bloody tap).
Collection Instructions Hemolyzed fluid will not be assayed.
