Examination for Microorganisms by Touch Preparation or Culture:

Always call the Microbiology Resident (206-8576 or pager 415-443-1438) prior to starting a brain or other biopsy procedure where microbiological diagnosis may be important. A touch preparation can be done to make a rapid diagnosis of microorganisms. To request a Touch Prep, make the "Parasitology Other" box on the Microbiology Requisition and write in "Touch Prep." The biopsy must be kept moist and handled aseptically. Collect on Telfa or gauze barely moistened with non-bacteriostatic saline. Fold Telfa or gauze over specimen and place in sterile screw-cap tube or specimen container. Do not float in saline or place in fixative.
