Principle Pinworms (Enterobius vermicularis) are intestinal nematodes. The female worms migrate down into the colon and out the anus, and deposit eggs around the anal opening, usually at night. The SWUBE¨ paddle is a clear plastic paddle coated on one side with a sticky adhesive. The sticky side of the paddle is pressed against the perianal skin and collects and holds pinworm eggs. The paddle is examined microscopically for the presence of pinworm eggs. Alternatively, CLEAR, not frosted, plastic tape can be used and placed sticky side down on a microscope slide.
Patient Preparation Specimens should be collected on 3 consecutive days to rule out pinworm infection. Collect each specimen first thing in the morning, before the patient has bathed or used the toilet.
Container type SWUBE paddle. Pinworm collection kits containing 3 SWUBE paddles and a collection instruction sheet are available from Lab Support Services (206-8199).
