Principle Aspirated specimens are concentrated, stained and examined microscopically for the presence of parasites.
Container type sterile, screw-capped tube
Collection Instructions Material aspirated from an amebic abscess seldom contains morphologically recognizable E. histolytica. Aspirate from liver abscesses should be taken from the margin of the abscess rather than the necrotic center. Send aspirated material to the Microbiology Lab.
Special instructions An amebic serology test for diagnosis of Entamoeba histolytica infection is available 7 days a week (see Amebiasis Serology). This test is used to support the diagnosis of amebiasis when a patient has a liver abscess.
