Principle Spinal fluid specimens > 2 mL are concentrated by centrifugation and plated on media that support the growth of fungi. Negative cultures are reported after 4 weeks. Positive results are reported by telephone to a physician when fungi are recovered.

Note: A cryptococcal antigen detection test is performed in the Serology Department on all cerebrospinal fluids submitted for mycology culture (See "Cryptococcal Antigen").

Collection Instructions Submit as much cerebrospinal fluid as possible (2 mL minimum) in a sterile, screw-cap tube.
