Principle Specimen is homogenized and an acid-fast smear is performed on the sediment. The sediment is inoculated into AFB culture media and incubated for 8 weeks. Negative cultures are reported after 8 weeks. Positive cultures are reported when AFB is recovered.
Container type sterile, screw-capped container
Collection Instructions Tissues biopsies should be submitted to the lab on a piece of sterile slightly moistened Telfa or gauze in a sterile screw cap container. The Telfa or gauze should be moistened with IV saline or saline available in the Microbiology Lab, not bacteriostatic saline that is kept in refrigerators located on the hospital wards. Do not float in saline.
