Principle Specimen is concentrated if volume received is > 3 mL. Acid-fast smears are not routinely performed on CSF, and are available by special request only. The sediment is inoculated into AFB culture media and incubated for up to 8 weeks. Negative cultures are finalized 8 weeks. Positive cultures are reported as soon as AFB are recovered.
Container type sterile, screw-capped tube
Amount to Collect 5-10 mL (3 mL minimum). Usually only a few tubercle bacilli are present in CSF from patients with tuberculous meningitis. For this reason, a large sample of CSF should be submitted whenever possible when tuberculous meningitis is suspected.
