Principle Specimen is concentrated by centrifugation if volume received is > 3 mL, and an acid-fast smear is performed on the concentrated sediment. The sediment is inoculated into AFB culture media and incubated for up to 8 weeks. Negative cultures are finalized after 8 weeks. Positive results are reported as soon as AFB are recovered.
Container type Sterile, screw-capped container, without preservative. For large volume collections, large volume sterile, evacuated bottles are available from the Pharmacy.
Collection Instructions Specimens must be collected in sterile containers.
