Principle Gastroccult slide includes a specially buffered guaiac test to detect occult blood and determines the pH of the sample not affected by the low pH typical of gastric samples.
Interpretation The Gastroccult(TM) reliably detects >= 50 mcL whole blood/100 mL gastric aspirate (50 mcg hemoglobin/mL gastric aspirate, or ~ 1:40,000 dilution of whole blood) over a pH range of 1-9. Result is designed for use as a preliminary screening aid and is not intended to replace other diagnostic procedures such as gastroscopic examination or X-ray studies. As with any occult blood test, results with the Gastroccult test cannot be considered conclusive evidence of the presence or absence of upper gastrointestinal bleeding or pathology.
Sample type Gastric aspirate obtained by nasogastric intubation, or vomitus
Special instructions Sample should be tested immediately after collection.
Normal range Negative.
Stability 24 hours at room temperature.
