Dermatopathology specimens are evaluated by residents at both San Francisco General Hospital & Trauma Center and the San Francisco V.A. Medical Center as part of the general pathology rotations at those institutions. In addition, an elective month in Dermatopathology is available with UCSF Dermatopathology Service based at Mt. Zion Medical Center which handles over 40,000 skin biopsy specimens per year. This rotation is taken by most residents during one of their two AP years.
Residents rotating on Dermatopathology assist with the acquisition and processing of dermatopathology specimen as need requires, obtain pertinent clinical history, and discuss differential diagnosis with attending Dermatopathologist before arriving at final diagnosis during sign-out. Extensive teaching files are available for resident review. Resident may also present cases at appropriate clinical conferences.
