Hematology (140.07)
General Elective Information
This is a 2-4 week medical student elective in laboratory hematology at Moffitt-Long Hospital. By the end of the rotation, students will be familiar with the role of the hematology laboratory in diagnosis and have a general understanding of interpretation of tests in the hematology laboratory, including evaluation of CBCs, routine coagulation tests, peripheral blood smears and body fluids, and bone marrow examination. Many students will also have participated in routine testing in the Blood Bank, Molecular Diagnostics Laboratory, and/or Flow Cytometry.

Overview
Tier 2. Students participate in a UCSF hematology laboratory; bone marrow sign-outs; daily teaching of blood smear and body fluid morphology; evaluation of specialty hematology and coagulation testing; and conferences covering hematologic diagnosis including the above, lymph nodes, immunophenotyping and genetic disorders. Students also have the opportunity to become familiar with the transfusion medicine service at Moffitt-Long hospital.
Course Objectives
Our primary goal is to provide the student with exposure to the principles of laboratory testing in hematology. By the end of the rotation, students should be familiar with the role of the hematology laboratory in diagnosis and have a general understanding of interpretation of tests in the hematology laboratory, including evaluation of CBCs, routine coagulation tests, peripheral blood smears and body fluids, and bone marrow examination. Many students will also have participated in routine testing in the Blood Bank, Molecular Diagnostics Laboratory, and/or Flow Cytometry.
Common Problems/Diseases
We see a wide variety of hematologic diseases, including hematopoietic malignancies, anemia, thrombocytopenia, leukopenia, reactive leukocytosis and thrombocytosis, and coagulopathies. Students will be exposed to a spectrum of hematologic disorders.
Recommended Text or Reading
Books in laboratory hematology will be provided for the student’s reference during the rotation.
Team Composition
The hematology laboratory is staffed by a Hematology Resident, a Bone Marrow resident, a Hematopathology fellow, and a faculty member covering the service. The student has close working contact with all these individuals.
