Objectives

EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVES
The principal objective of this activity is to identify areas of diagnostic difficulties
and challenges in everyday surgical pathology and cytopathology practice, and
to provide expert insight on selected topics through different educational formats.
Educational experience is further enhanced through a collegial contact and
one-on-one interaction throughout the course. The topics selected each year
reflect areas in which substantial information and progress has been made (as
identified through recent publications and other data gathering efforts). The topics of
discussion also focus on areas in which there is significant difficulty in interpretation
of pathological features. In general terms, we expect that at the end of this course,
the participants will be able to:
• diagnose lower anogenital squamous lesions, uterine sarcomas, mesenchymal
tumors of the liver, infectious colitides, carcinoma involving the skin, and cutaneous
lymphomas;
• classify, diagnose and select the appropriate differential diagnosis for endocervical
and endometrial adenocarcinomas, interstitial lung disease, hepatic granulomas,
and Barrett’s mucosa;
• recognize mixed epithelial mesenchymal tumors of the uterus;
• interpret precursor lesions of endometrioid adenocarcinoma of the endometrium;
• understand and apply the usage of molecular markers of primary central nervous
system lesions;
• avoid common errors in the evaluation and diagnosis of gynecologic frozen
sections;
• recognize and understand diagnostic challenges in non-alcoholic steatohepatitis;
• consider when it may be helpful to apply new ancillary techniques in the diagnosis
of soft tissue tumors;
• use criteria shared in the course for diagnosis and classification of multiple types of
tumors and lesions.
